Artist Statement
I use my art as a way to remember and pay my respects to those I’ve lost. To me, making art in their memory is like making an offering to their spirits. My work often depicts scenes or symbolism from my dreams, which have always been an important guide for me in my life and have helped me to process traumas I’ve experienced or help me to come to terms with a truth I am avoiding. I incorporate cultural references to my celtic ancestry in my work, focusing on pagan beliefs revolving around the cycle of life and sacredness of nature.
If not from my dreams, my work is often also heavily inspired by music. My imagination runs wild when I listen to music, coming up with stories and scenes that play out to the lyrics of a song. I write down what those lyrics inspire me to paint or draw and then I begin by doing research, making preliminary sketches, and taking reference photos. My two dimensional work is primarily done in oil paint, chalk pastels, or oil pastels.
